Tobin Payne
I first met Tobin in 2016 when he attended an open evening for year 6 students at Chesham Grammar School. He blew me away by answering Junior Maths challenge questions faster than I could read them. I invited him to sit the Senior, Intermediate and Junior maths challenges at CGS that year. He achieved best in school for the latter two, despite being far younger than the students the challenges are designed for. He also went on to qualify for the Intermediate Olympiad that year and achieved a Gold medal in the Junior Olympiad, all of this before he’d even started secondary school.

Almost nine years later and Tobin is (perhaps unsurprisingly) studying Maths at university. He completed seven years at Chesham Grammar, achieving more gold certificates and olympiad medals than I can remember. In addition to his stellar performances in maths competitions he achieved straight 9s at GCSE, four A*s at A-level (Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Physics), an A grade in German A-level, an A grade in Economics AS level and a double 1 in STEP II and III.
These achievements alone are not sufficient to make him an excellent teacher. What is truly great about Tobin is the way he can atomise maths, making it accessible to others. I have been lucky enough to teach some fantastic mathematicians in my career but it is rare to meet someone who is also gifted at teaching. It has been a pleasure to see Tobin grow throughout secondary school and I’m delighted that he has agreed to work with me now that he’s finished school.
